The Hills Are Alive

After a full day of tourist activity in the city, we took a day trip to another major tourist attraction just South of Seattle - Mt. Rainier National Park.

The park is about a two hour drive Southwest of Seattle.  Well worth the excursion.  We had perfect weather - in the 70s and sunny.    As we were leaving the city, the local radio station was giving a heat advisory:  it was projected to get to 90 degrees in the city, a degree warmer than the all time high of 89!   You can imagine how thrilled we were to be going up to the mountains to escape THAT heat wave.   (It's all about your perspective, isn't it?)

We spent the first part of our visit hiking out from Paradise, with a view of the Nisqually glacier and beautiful alpine meadows, which John Muir once described as the most beautiful he had seen in all his days of mountain wandering.

After lunch we headed over to the other side of mountain and the Sunrise visitor center.  Sunrise offers great views of the Emmons glacier:

It was a full day of hiking and we all came home tired, a little sunburned and wishing we had a few more days to hang out in the cool mountain air.
