Tuesday morning we planned to head to Toledo for a day trip. Unfortunately we were not able to get 5 train tickets to and from Toledo at the times we wanted to go. The train station (Atocha) is just down the street from the Prado, so we decided to head over for a visit.
The line was not too long and moved rather quickly. It's funny listening to the variety of languages and groups while waiting in the queue, especially the other families. Often, as parents, you feel relieved to not have toddlers and at the same time sympathetic to those who do. Especially in the Madrid heat.
I'm not equipped at all to describe the Prado. It is in a word, enormous. We were there for nearly three hours and probably did not get through half of the place. Photos are not allowed in El Prado, so there are only a few exterior shots in the Madrid link on the right of this page.
For me, the price of admission were the Franciso Goya Black Paintings, done in the years just before his death and displayed together in the same gallery. They deal with very dark subjects, but one in particular I fell in love with, which some say inspired modernist uses of empty space, is El Perro (image from Wiki Commons):

If we ever return to Madrid, I would make time to visit the Prado more than once, to take it all in.
