Last night we had dinner at Shiro's Sushi Restaurant, widely regarded as the best sushi restaurant in the city, and written up in the New York Times, USA TODAY, Fortune and all of the local press as the best.
Sushi fans that we are, we were excited to try this restaurant that everyone seemed to say was the best in a city known for great sushi. Our review? Great fresh seafood, but not the most inspired preparations. Very good, but did not live up to the hype.
The quality of the seafood is definitely at the very top, so sashimi and nigiri style sushi dishes are the best. Essentially less is more. Particularly noteworthy were the herring, yellow tail and sweet shrimp. Simply prepared and delicious. The broiled black cod is also not to be missed here. Don't let the "broiled" description turn you off, it is very lightly cooked and melts in your mouth. The maki (rolls) are pretty basic - not as good as we had at Nijo sushi on our first day here.
Given the history of this restaurant, it's legendary proprietor (Shiro started the first full service sushi bar in Seattle in 1967), and the top quality seafood, this is a place to stop for sushi in Seattle. But skip the rolls and go straight to the sashimi.
