Goodbye Seattle, Hello Orcas Island

Today we said goodbye to our digs at Hotel Vintage Park in downtown Seattle and headed North to the San Juan Islands.  We left Seattle around 8:30 a.m., expecting a 2.5 hour trip north to Anacortes to catch the ferry to Orcas Island.

We had been warned that in the summer the wait to bring a car across on the ferry can be up to two hours, so we were fully prepared to miss the 10:20 am ferry and wait for the one at 12:35 pm.  Traffic was not bad and we pulled up to the ferry station at 10:10 a.m. and were grateful to learn that we had made the 10:20 am ferry.   Just saved two hours on our vacation!

Ferry ride was just over an hour, with a stop at Shaw Island before we got to Orcas Island.

Ferry ride featured beautiful scenery and typical ferry food (although Jenny and Ali claim the clam chowder was delicious!)

Because of our good fortune on the ferry trip, we arrived on the island a couple of hours before we could check in to our cottage.  So, we stopped for lunch at a great little cafe called Rose's Bakery & Cafe.

It was packed and we ended up sitting outside.  Let's just say it was a wee bit cold.  The Oregon pinot noir from Patricia Green warmed us up a bit, as did the soup.  Jenny reports her halibut sandwich was out of this world.   The kids all had hot chocolate for dessert and the boys had fresh peach pie.  Great little spot.

After lunch, on to Crescent Beach Cottage.
